This program is for individuals with extensive work experience. The combination of professional knowledge in his/her field eliminates the need for core materials and conventional courses. Three book reports on books selected by your advisor and a research paper on a topic related to your field of study must be completed to earn a Bachelor's or Master's degree. An advisor will be available to offer help, evaluate your book reports and research paper and guide you through the learning process.

A thesis on a topic related to your field of study must be completed to earn a Ph.D. degree. An advisor will guide you every step of the way.

Principal Idea

Executives and professionals with substantial work experience often acquire the core knowledge in their professional areas without formal academic training. These students will profit by enrolling in an Accelerated Program at Washington International University. These degree programs bypass the traditional core courses to concentrate on new developments and trends in each subject area.

Instructions

Bachelor's or Master's Degree:
1 .Each student will select a field of study in which his/her research project and reading assignments are based.

2. After enrollment in the program, study materials and specific guidelines for writing the book reports and research paper will be provided by Washington International University.

A faculty member will be assigned to each student to grade his/her reports and to help guide the student to successfully complete the program.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree: Once admitted, a candidate must prepare an original thesis which demonstrates his or her in-depth understanding of their specialized field and his/her ability to research - analyze - criticize and integrate subject matter within their profession. At least two drafts of the thesis must be submitted to a candidate's advisor for corrections, suggestions and improvements.

Each candidate will be assigned a faculty advisor to assist the student in preparing the thesis.

Duration Of Study

All accelerated degree programs are designed to be completed within one year. You can extend your study time up to fifteen months by sending in a written request. A modest fee of $300.00 will be charged for each six-month extension period.

Qualifications And Prerequisites

Bachelor's Degree: An applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent, have a minimum of nine (9) years of work experience in their selected field of study and be at least 25 years of age. (If you hold an Associate's degree, you can deduct six years from the work experience requirement. Therefore, you will only need to have three years work experience in your chosen field of study.)
Master's Degree: An applicant is required to have a Bachelor's degree or must demonstrate with a paper or submit documents to support his/her bachelor's degree level competency. He/she must have work experience of five (5) years.
Doctoral degree: Doctoral candidates must have six (6) years of work experience, broad knowledge in their selected field of study and a Master's degree or must demonstrate with a paper or submit documents to support his/her master's level competency.

All applicants: A formula for computing compliance with the work experience requirements: For every year of traditional university education completed, an applicant may deduct three years from the work experience requirement for the degree program for which he/she is applying, providing that he/she meets the other requirements.

Bachelor - Master - Doctoral Accelerated Degree Programs Guide

Bachelor of Business Administration

Accounting
This course will explore a variety of contemporary accounting topics that deal with the changing role of accounting information in today's business. Examples of issues discussed include cost concepts and behavior, product-costing systems, resource allocations, capital budgeting, financial control, compensation issues and accounting ethics.

E-Commerce
This course will take a strategic look as E-Commerce, discussing the application and E-Commerce technology and solutions to E-Commerce business problems. Profiles of several successful E-Commerce businesses will be explored in conjunction with learning the basics of starting in Internet Business.

Economics
The aggregates, such as government, households, business and the foreign sectors will be examined. Economic measures will include total output, total employment, and general equilibrium. Specific areas to be discussed include the principles of Capitalism, the role of government, the business cycle as well as Fiscal and Monetary policy including how the banking system works and the role of the Federal Reserve. Finally, individual markets will be explained.

Finance
The student will learn how to read and analyze financial statements to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the firm and then how to project future financial statements. Also discussed will be the time value of money, the cost of capital and the valuation of financial instruments. Finally working capital needs will be determined as well as optimum levels for cash, accounts receivable and inventory

Healthcare Management
The Bachelor of Business Administration in Healthcare Management is designed to integrate a foundation of general education and applied sciences with the expertise that prepares the graduate for management position in health care. The Bachelor of Science in Health Administration curriculum addresses the basic body of knowledge, understanding, and skills identified to be relevant to healthcare administration.

Information Systems Management
This course provides students with a wide array of knowledge of computer hardware, software and applications. It focuses on database, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications. It provides an understanding of current information technology, how to manage it , and how to integrate it in business processes. In addition, this course will explore how information that is collected within the systems can be effectively disseminated to meet organizational requirements.

International Business
The international dimension of business introduces diversity in cultural, social, and economic background to the management task. Diversity in backgrounds and management styles must be understood in order to profitably foster cooperation among individuals within the international organization and across organizational boundaries (such as in supplier-client relationships)

Marketing
This course will highlight the basic principles of marketing and how they apply to the business environment. Topics include the marketing mix, Life Cycle Theory, marketing segmentation and channels of distribution. Finally the legal implications and social responsibility will be examined.

Management
In this course you will be asked to read three texts, each of which explores a variety of issues and theories impacting on the success of a management approach. The course work will include a study of several highly regarded philosophies of management as well as a variety of critiques of prevailing systems of management. In addition, you will study the concept of teamwork and a variety of ways in which business teams succeed and fail.

MBA - Master of Business Administration

Accounting
This program will explore the interrelationship of accounting information and management decisions. Contemporary topics and financial cases will be assessed to substantiate the importance of accounting information to decision makers. The focus of the course will be on how decisions and resulting benefits will be affected. The topics discussed will be of an advanced nature and will require conceptual as well as analytical thinking.

E-Commerce
Not only producers, but consumers, are looking to the Internet as the definitive source for information, services, and communication. The course will take a strategic look at E-Commerce, discussing the application and E-Commerce technology and solutions to E-Commerce business problems. Profiles of several successful E-Commerce business will be explored in conjunction with learning the basics of starting an Internet Business.

Human Resource Management
You will study the dramatic changes management practice has gone through in recent years and you will learn how to deal with the impact of culture - both on a national and international level - and the ways in which culture influences an organization's human resource management policies. You will also consider how to cope with issues such as cultural diversity and its related tensions when working in a global economy.

Information Systems Management
You will learn the essential steps necessary to incorporate information technology into your company's long-term strategies and operations. You will also study current trends such as database marketing and learn how to successfully position your company for success by managing its customer database. The course will also provide you with the skills needed to help maximize organizational cost effectiveness and customer value via information technology.

International Banking & Finance (Formerly Banking & Investment Degree Program now Combined)
The student will learn the concepts essential to understanding the banking system and how to evaluate investment decisions. Topics covered include money and capital markets, measuring risk and rates of return, valuing stocks and bonds, market efficiency, mutual funds, tax advantaged investments and derivatives.

International Business
The international dimension introduces diversity in culture, political-legal institutions, economic and technical systems, and so forth. These factors must be accounted for when developing strategies for organizing behavior across national boundaries, and strategies for serving international markets.

Management
You will study several highly regarded philosophies of management as well as a variety of critiques of prevailing systems of management. In addition, you will evaluate the predominant systems of management found in existing business and study alternative schemes that may lead to greater successes. The masters level management course is more rigorous than the bachelors level management course and will require more critique and analysis in the written work prepared for the course.

Marketing

Bachelor Of Arts In:

Counseling
Key steps to mastering a solution-focused model in the climate of time-limited, action-based, group oriented approaches are presented. Students are provided with a solid foundation in both psychological and career development counseling including objectives, programs and strategies. The dynamics of group counseling and group interaction is examined.

Education
Current problems with the educational process are presented as well as state-of-the-art approaches to improving the educational system. Specific study areas include the following: (1) The Quality School model - motivating students through a rewards based system vice coercion, (2) alternative approaches to public education, i.e., private vouchers, and (3) dealing with the unmotivated child.

English
The structure and development of the English language. The history of the development of English, the expanding vocabulary (Old English, Middle English), sentence structure, grammatical acceptability, semantics, standards of pronunciation, punctuation, present difficulties, and stress and intonation are studied. Special emphasis is placed on the development of the vocabulary of the English language as well as the varieties of international English in use today.

Hotel Management and Tourism
This course provides an overview of the hospitality industry. Specific areas of study include organizational design, hotel management careers, general hotel management concepts, housekeeping, security, marketing, accounting, and financial control, property management, systems management, consumer affairs, communications and human service, food-purchasing, food-cost control, inventory control, menu planning, labor cost analysis and control, and liquor purchasing and control.

International Studies And Diplomacy
Geopolitical perspectives on the twenty-first century are evaluated including power and politics, territory, sovereignty, elections, resources, population, international migration, international law, the United Nations, global economy, and global communications. The concept of international regimes (principles, norms, rules, and procedures) and their effect on international behavior is presented. Classic iinternationalpower and control politics is also studied.

Mass Communications
Modern communication theory and mass media communication is analyzed especially as it impacts the popular culture. The major components of mass communication are studied: sender, message, audience. A study is made regarding how theories of mass communication relate to the broader understanding of society and culture. Nonviolent communications skills are fully explained and their application to personal, professional, and political differences is discussed. Additionally, techniques for persuading others to move to your side of an argument are discussed.

Philosophy
An Introduction to key philosophers and their relevance in the quest for understanding ideas regarding questions of humanity, ethics, truth, knowledge, God, reason, cconsciousness justice, goodness, etc. is presented. Reasoning, critical thinking, and the science of logic is examined as well as the complexity and meaning of language. The theories and concepts for the understanding of knowledge, epistemology, is studied as well. The architecture and analysis of language is previewed. This course is designed for those who want to explore the basics of philosophy, critical thinking and logic.

Political Science
A review of American political history from colonialism to constitutionalism and the federal system. Voting, political parties, government institutions, the chief eexecutive the judiciary, ccivilrights and liberties are discussed. An examination of critical political issues facing the UUSgovernment in the twenty-first century: healthcare, eeducation environment, immigration, the electronic revolution, defense pposture etc How powerful people and institutions influence legislators is examined including how political decisions affect our daily lives.

Sociology
The behavior exhibited by individuals in a crowd is studied. Social problems are examined from an economic perspective and how the policies developed to alleviate such problems tend to fail. Studies the empirical aspects of hoe sociological research is performed and the analysis and compilation of data. American sociological problems are compared with those of other nations. Current social issues are discussed including downsizing, income gaps, and the health care crisis. Master Of Arts In

Counseling
Investigates the techniques, dynamics and therapeutic concepts used in group counseling and group psychotherapy. The group leader as a philosopher/scientist is examined. The power of language, cocounselingrocesses and content development and unethical behavior in cocounselings discussed. An overview of the theory and practice of Alfred Adler's approach to psychological cocounselings presented. A comprehensive review of the currently used theories of counseling is provided: similarities and differences between theories, major constructs, change processes and case studies.

Education
This course examines the inner life of the dedicated teacher. What it means to teach and make a connection with students. Constructive solutions to the many problems facing teachers and teacher self-realization is discussed. The course presents numerous teaching strategies designed to make the classroom a better place to learn. A multifaceted view of intelligence is developed in an effort to help students reach their vocational an avocational goals.

English
Basic learning will be the bachelor's level course description. The masters level English course is more rigorous than the bachelor's level English course and will require more critique and analysis in the written work prepared for the course.

Hotel Management and Tourism
Numerous methods designed to develop visitor attractions and increase tourism are presented. Various professional management techniques for hotel, restaurant and tourist attractions are discussed. Strategy and policy case studies are reviewed which emphasize areas of hotel management and restaurant and tourism management such as tours, cruise ships and airline operations.

International Studies and Diplomacy
International potentially troubling trends into the future are studied: environment, society, and the economy. The long-term sustainability of various global regions are discussed along with the many choices for the future and a discussion of what scenarios are likely to prevail. The global political environment as well as international defense policies and broad security concerns are examined. The issues confronting the third world countries are reviewed: poverty, over population, social chaos, and environmental degradation.

Mass Communications
This course studies mass media, media messages, media issues, media history, effects, and culture. Identifies the eight mass media, the major content forms disseminated by the media to mass audiences, and the effects of mass media on individual lives and on the global society. Reviews the telecommunications technologies that have developed throughout the 1990's, with particular consideration of computer-mediated cocommunicationsuch as the Internet. Addresses different ethical philosophies throughout history from Plato to Foucault. Focuses on a mostly traditional approach to ethical philosophy, examining individual theories as they pertain to mass communications. Covers the origins, path, and practice of focus group research and provides a focused look at the beginnings of modern modes of mass communication.

Political Science
An analysis of the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches of the UUSGovernment. Topics include: congressional rule changes, reorganization, public support for government institutions, special interests, etc. The interaction of the Congress and the presidency is examined as well as the the historical development of the legislative and the congressional branch of government. A day to day account of the workings of the Supreme Court is presented as well as the Supreme Court's interaction with the media.

Sociology
Examines the impact of violence exposure on children and youth. Contemporary intervention programs are reviewed and new approaches are studied. The course also examines the practice of bioethnics from a sociological point of view. The role bioetnics plays in the current medical system is analyzed. Additionally, the growth of public observation and the inevitable loss of privacy is examined.
